[edit] Overview
This section is intended to provide some basic guidelines to writing articles for Wannabe Wiki. By following these simple principles, users can help ensure that articles on this wiki continue to be clear, accurate, and unbiased. In addition, these principles help to resolve disputes, and ensure that the writing experience remains a pleasurable one for all users.
[edit] Rules and Etiquette
[edit] Acceptable Material
The primary purpose of this wiki is to present the readers with factual information. However, since School Rumble is a work of fiction rather than a science, it is acceptable to provide the users with objective reasoning.
If you want to present a line of reasoning or a theory, feel free to do so, but make sure that it passes the acid test. When presenting a theory, make sure that the readers have the complete story available to them. If there are any known weaknesses to the theory, make sure that they get mentioned as well.
Let's consider an example, taken from the English Wikipedia entry on School Rumble.
- "As of the 6th and 7th volumes of the manga, the plot of the story has changed greatly. The story has switched to focusing mostly on the interactions between Harima Kenji, Tsukamoto Yakumo, who is Tenma's younger sister, and Sawachika Eri, who is Tenma's classmate. Tenma and Karasuma Ooji play more infrequent and minor roles. This is commonly attributed to the popularity polls conducted regularly in the Japanese magazine, which resulted in showing how these three characters are far more popular then the rest."[1]
Note that this theory passes the acid test. In order to disprove this theory, it would have to be demonstrated that the popularity polls did not have an effect on Kobayashi Jin's writing.
The following is an excerpt, taken from the Anime News Network.
- D: There are many character popularity polls over the Internet, particularly for romantic relationships between characters. Have you read any of those? If so, would you refer to those opinions, ignore them, or set the plot in the opposite way to surprise readers?
- (Kobayashi Jin) K: I don’t hang out on the Internet very often, but editors would give me opinions from the web. However, those opinions would not affect the plot development, for the personalities of characters would be dished out naturally during the progress of the story.[2]
Here we have information that can serve to weaken the proposed theory. When new information like this becomes available, be sure to modify your entry to show how it impacts the validity of your theory.
Note that if the first passage was founded entirely on opinion, then this would not be possible - and so it would fail the acid test.
[edit] Amending Errors: Procedure
When you come across an entry that appears to have some erroneous content, the following procedure should be followed in order to rectify the mistake.
- Bring up the questionable material on the entry's Discussion Page. If your entry in the Discussion page goes unnoticed for a few days, consider adding a "Check" flag just after the content that needs to be re-evaluated. The syntax used is: {{Check|''Write a description of what part of the article needs to be re-evaluated in here''}}
- An evaluation of the questionable material will take place. This will allow the author of the original content a chance to defend his/her work.
- Once the facts have been confirmed, the article may then be modified as necessary in order to preserve the accuracy of the wiki.
[edit] Be Polite!
You may be right. They might be wrong. Regardless, it isn't difficult to be polite - a little effort goes a long way in keeping the environment an enjoyable one for all users.
[edit] Neutrality
The purpose of this wiki is to provide users with accurate information about School Rumble, Anime, and WannabeFansubs. As a result, it is important to write without injecting personal preferences and bias into the entries. At the same time, however, WannabeFansubs encourages you to express your creativity and to put forth your own ideas on the series discussed in this wiki. Here are some useful guidelines on maintaining a neutral stance.
[edit] Language Use
Unless justified, avoid the use of extreme language. As a general rule, statements that use extreme langugage tend to be very difficult to prove, since the statement must be shown to be valid for a larger number of cases. Compare the following statements:
"Harima prefers curry to all other types of food."
"Harima prefers curry to some other types of food."
"Harima prefers curry to nikujaga."
In order for the first statement to be true, Harima must demonstrate that he prefers curry to any other type of food. A single counterexample is sufficient to disprove the statement.
In order for the second statement to be true, Harima need only demonstrate that he prefers curry to another type of food. A single example is sufficient to prove the statement.
The last statement is the most useful statement to the reader. The concept of 'preference' depends on context. By stating specifically what Harima prefers curry to, the readers get a clear idea of how Harima values curry and nikujaga relative to each other - we have a reference point that gives the comparison word "prefers" meaning.
[edit] Opinion vs. Reasoning: The Acid Test
The Acid Test:
An opinion cannot be proven to be true or false.
To rephrase the above point: a petition does not qualify as an inductive proof.
There are plenty of other opportunities for you to express your opinions on the series, however. A great place to discuss your views on the series is on the WannabeFansubs Forums. This place can also serve as an excellent testing ground for any ideas that you might have for future articles.
[edit] Citations
Don't Plagiarise! If you paraphrase or quote somebody else's work, make sure that they receive credit for it.
Providing sources for where you found particular pieces of information is also useful for the purposes of validating the information in the articles.
